6 family activities in Mallorca’s sierra

Mallorca is the perfect combination between beach and mountain; especially for families who like to have a bit of both during their holidays. After exploring the coves of the island, there is nothing better than driving inland and discovering the mountains and small villages.

When this time comes, you must head towards the Sierra de la Tramuntana. Located in the north-west of Mallorca and with more than 1,445 meters of height in its highest point, it´s the main mountain chain of the Balearic Islands. It received the title of World Heritage of Humanity in the year 2011.
However, to understand what the Sierra de la Tramuntana is, you’ll need to visit it and explore it from the inside: walking its paths, swimming in its lakes, getting lost in the woods, falling in love with the views … We guarantee it will be worth spending several days in your travel there.

In addition to spectacular sceneries and pure air, you will be able to enjoy family outdoor sports and a wide range of activities within the mountains. These are some of the plans you can make in the Mallorca’s Sierra.

Trekking

Have you all brought your sneakers? There is no better way to explore the mountain than to walk it. In all its length, the Tramuntana has hundreds of routes and paths for hiking. They are all ranked by their level of difficulty. Of course, when travelling with children, you should opt for a simple route. One of them is the one that goes from Sóller to Deiá: about 10 kilometers along natural landscapes and slight slopes. They will love it, and so will you!

Geocaching

The traditional treasure hunt is now called Geocaching, which consists of finding small hidden chests using the coordinates that others have previously posted on Geocaching´s website. There are more than six million in the whole planet and 300 are located in Mallorca, most of them in the area of the Sierra. Looking for these treasures together will take you to incredible places and you’ll have a great time. Watch out because it’s addictive!

Visit to the villages of the sierra

Among the mountains of the Tramuntana are hidden some of the most beautiful villages on the island. Small stone houses, cobbled streets and tons of history that will be waiting for you. If you’re travelling with small children this can be a very interesting option, so they’re not bored and remain entertained. Don’t miss Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller.

Cycling

If your children are a little older and love riding their bikes, you can take them to make a short route along the asphalted roads of the mountains. Choose your own pace and you will live an unforgettable experience.

Camping

It´s one of the experiences that excites children the most, as they feel like small explorers lost in the middle of nature. Be aware that in the Balearic Islands free camping is not allowed, so you will have to locate some of the places that are adapted for it and that also offer all the necessary services (showers, laundries…).

Visit to the Monastery of Lluc

This is one of Mallorca´s best kept secrets, mainly because it’s hidden in the Sierra de Tramuntana. You can visit it and also enjoy the wonderful restaurant there. It´s considered a place of pilgrimage for the Mallorcan people, you’ll see why when you get there.
These are some of the activities you can do with your family in the Sierra de la Tramuntana. You can be sure that you will have a lot of fun exploring this beautiful part of the island.
