8 tips to protect yourself from the sun on the beach during the summer

The sun, in Summer, gives us long days of fun at the beach and dyes our skin with a little color. However, its rays can also be harmful to us if we’re not careful. That´s why it is so important to use photoprotectors that keep our skin safe during each exposure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is firm on this point: “As ozone depletion is increased and sunbathing among people around the world increases, the risk of developing health complications due to overexposure to UV radiation is becoming a major public health issue“, said Dr. Lee Jong-wook, former Director-General of WHO, at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Remedying the problem is simple and does not prevent us from enjoying the beach in the Summer. Just take certain precautions, especially with children, to avoid the effects of solar radiation. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Avoid the sun at noon

In the central hours of the day (from noon until 2pm) solar radiation is much stronger so it is important to avoid exposure at this time. It is recommended to stay in the shade and protect yourself properly.

2. Choose an appropriate photoprotector

Sun cream is one of the main barriers we can use to avoid the effects of the sun. That´s why it is so important to choose a product suitable for our skin type taking into account the intensity of UVA rays. It is recommended to always use SPF 30 or higher and that the cream protects against ultraviolet rays B and A.

3. Apply sunscreen the right way

In this case, it is not important to waste a bit, as it’s always better to use large quantities; in fact, it is estimated that an adult should use about 35 grams of cream in each application. It is important that the skin is well covered.

4. Protect all parts of your body

The face, lips, eyes and scalp are also susceptible to burn or suffer the effects of the sun. Our advice? Use a specific facial protector, a lip balm with sun blocking properties, sunglasses and a hat.

5. Apply the cream in advance

In order for the cream to be effective and penetrate the skin, it is important to apply the photoprotector 20 or 30 minutes before sunbathing. Always follow the instructions on the product label.

6. Repeat applications

You must reapply the sunscreen every two hours or after every time you get in the water. It is important that you are always protected.

7. Use clothing as protection

There is no better barrier than the physical one, and clothing fulfills that function. Depending on the material of which it is made it will be more or less resistant; however, there are t-shirts and pants on the market that protect against UV rays, check them out!

8. Drink a lot of water

Sun exposure can cause dehydration throughout your whole body so it is essential to consume plenty of fluids.

By following these tips you will be protecting your skin from solar radiation and avoiding its harmful effects. You’ll look tan and you’ll be enjoying the beach safely.
