The legend of the Cova d’en Xoroi

This cave as well as spectacular views also hides a secret, a story that surrounds the Cova d’en Xoroi.

The story tells that a man a long time ago, it is not known if it was a corsair abandoned by his own or a survivor of a shipwreck, came to the cave. He settled in the Cova d’en Xoroi climbing the cliffs to save himself and stayed there.

In order to survive, he stole food from the nearest population but went unnoticed, until one day he saw a girl and fell madly in love with her. He could not stop thinking about her… And the day she married, he abducted her and took her to his cave.

Days, months and years passed without anyone knowing where he was, without anyone knowing who had taken the girl from Alaior. But in the cave it was not the abducted girl, it was a girl in love with the boy who kidnapped her. They had children and formed a small family, but always hiding in the cave.

The robberies to the inhabitants of the near towns were more frequent every time, since not only one person had to eat, now it was a whole family who had to be fed.

One winter day, after the great snow, the man went to look for food but this time it was not only him getting to the cave, because he footsteps in the snow led the people to the cave and there they found the family. When they were cornered, the young man and his eldest son jumped off the cliff, but the woman and the rest of her children were transferred to the city.

Today in Alaior there is a long lineage, which they say has not yet been extinguished.

We have already told you the legend that surrounds the Cova d’en Xoroi now it is only left to see the beautiful views from one of its terraces. You cannot leave Menorca without stepping inside this cave.
