Attention lovers of the sea, the mountains and adventure sports: the coasteering has reached our coastline and is most likely going to stay! The Mallorcan coast is one of the best places in the world to practice this discipline that combines up to 8 sports in 1. See: hiking, climbing, high water jumps, speleology, abseiling, ropes, diving and swimming. Are you ready to know the places in Mallorca where to practice coasteering?

A “modern” sport

Let’s do some (recent) history. The first time this word came to light was in the book “Sea Cliff Climbing” (Climbing Cliffs, 1973),  where instructions were given to travel the steep walls of the coast. Although the term did not become popular until the 80’s, when a group of surfers in Pembrokeshire, in their constant search for the best wave, ran the steep cliffs of the Welsh coast for that purpose.

This peculiar way to cool off and get to know that part of the coast that can’t be seen from the land is one of the most complete experiences which can be practiced outdoors. Through routes that usually last between 3 and 5 hours (with options for all levels) you can get to know first -hand the fauna and the Majorcan coast from a unique perspective.

Mallorca, ideal destination for coasteering

Needless to say, the spectacular nature of the Mallorcan coast and the temperature of its waters make it an ideal destination for this practice. One of the best places to practice coasteering in Mallorca are undoubtedly the bays of Alcudia and Pollença.

From Cala Victoria you can see endemic birds, fish of different sizes and shapes, cormorants and, in some cases, wild goats, sea hawks, black vultures or ospreys. On the other side of the bay of Alcudia, Cala Ratjada offers a spectacular bay and many jumps where you can increase your adrenaline levels.

A little further southeast of the island we find the coast of Manacor, another spot where to practice coasteering in Mallorca. The best places that we will find there are Cala Millor, the surroundings of the beach of Porto Cristo and Cala Romantica, a point from which some of the most demanded routes begin.

The coast of Calviá is another important point of the 550 km of Mallorcan coasts ideal for the practice of coasteering; among them, it is worth highlighting the area of Paguera and Cala Fornells. And beware, the cliff of Portals Vells will not leave anyone indifferent!

Among the best accredited companies on the island are Mon d’AdventureMes AventuraMallorca Adventure SportsRock and Water MallorcaViu Aventura, or Explora Mallorca. They will give you all the technical safety material, helmet and social responsibility insurance, since it is not advisable to do coasteering on your own because of all the risks involved. The neoprene suit (depending on the temperature of the water) and a life jacket will also be facilitated by them, (depending on the level of difficulty of the route). What you will have to bring is a bathing suit (or two), water, sunscreen and sneakers which you don’t care too much about (much better than soft booties), since they will submerge in the sea and may end up damaged by contact with some sharp rock. This said, fun and pure adrenaline are secured thanks to one of the most exciting sports you can practice in Mallorca!

Basic needs to practice coasteering

It is necessary to be older than 10 years (although some companies require a minimum age of 12), to know how to swim, not to have vertigo and to be passionate about adventure sports. All the companies that offer this service have specialized monitors that will assure you the best emotions and guide you through the most spectacular walls, caves and cliffs of Mallorca. For the “less brave”, it should be noted that the jumps into the water are not mandatory.

And now that you know the best corners where to practice coasteering in Mallorca and all basic requirements to practice this sports, why not give this special type of sport (which involves several different disciplines) a chance? Walk on cliffs, climb over the water at low altitude, jump into the sea, cross a creek with zip wire, walk through underwater caves, step on hidden beaches and with no access from the land… doesn’t this sound wonderful? Now the only thing you have to do is dive into the water to practice one of the most fashionable sports.
