Those who think that Mallorca is limited to its numerous and splendid beaches are very wrong; or that there is little to do and to see on the island outside of the summer months. There are many activities to enjoy in Mallorca when the summer ends. This is because the mildness and particularities of its climate make autumn practically a second spring. Nature, gastronomy, sport, history, art…No matter what your tastes may be, you will surely find something to do. For now, we’re giving you a few ideas and tips.

Nature

Mallorca is full of charming natural places which get especially magical during the autumn months. It is absolutely essential to visit during this time, and without any rush, the Sierra de Tramuntana, declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2011: the authentic natural treasure of the island. One can’t miss, also in the north, the spectacle of Ses Fonts Ufanes. A mysterious hydrological phenomenon that occurs in winter: groundwater sources that flow from the forest floor unexpectedly. Another one of the great natural attractions of Mallorca are its caves. On the island there are more than 200. At the very least, you have to visit the ones in Arta, Drach or Hams which have a captivating beauty.

Palma de Mallorca

The capital of the island is well worth a few walks. You cannot miss its incredible cathedral, La Seu: an icon of the island and a jewel of Levantine-Gothic style. And we can’t forget the rest of the historic center, full of palaces and stately courtyards. Also to spend the day we recommend the one known as the “Balearic Soho”, the Santa Catalina neighborhood, one of the most charming places in Palma. For the lovers of the night, we have La Lonja, an area of the city that wakes up at sunset.

Unique villages

Mallorca is full of towns with a special allure that in autumn offer extra peace and tranquillity. Both on the coast (Banyalbufar, Andratx, Portocolom…and others fishing villages), and inland (where we find small paradisiac places like Orient and Esporles). We can’t forget to mention a visit to the three villages of the so-called “Golden Triangle” of the Sierra de Tramuntana (Sóller, Deiá and Valldemossa). Another perfect activity to do in Mallorca at the end of the summer since you can explore these places more calmly.

Sports

Beyond water, beach and summer sports, Mallorca is an unbeatable place for those who like to go hiking, with a lot of options and levels of difficulty. In addition, in recent years it has become a famous destination for mountain bike enthusiasts (a whole lifestyle), and that special form of athletic walk called Nordic walking. Not to mention the brave practitioners of the mixed adventure sports known as coasteering. Those who prefer more relaxed activities should know that the island is a paradise for golf lovers or that it is ideal for horseback riding.

Gastronomy

With a mild decrease in temperatures, autumn is an ideal season to face the great display of Mallorcan cuisine. We can start by visiting their modern gastronomic markets, continue to look for the perfect ensaimada and finally get to know the gems of their traditional pastries. It is also a good time to taste those typical stews of the island not suitable for the summer: the “bullit” (cooked with chickpeas and rice, meat or fish), the “frito Mallorquín” or the “greixonera”. Or you can surrender -more comfortably than in the summer- to some of the most unique restaurants on the island.

Mills, talayots and lighthouses

Living history and popular art. In Mallorca more than 2.000 examples of wind-mills of various types, that will assault you as soon as you land on the island, are conserved. It is therefore worthwhile to get to know the ones like Pla de Sant Jordi or Jonquet. Because of the lower temperatures, autumn is also ideal to visit the traces of the mysterious Talayotic culture or to calmly approach the most beautiful lighthouses of its rugged and strategic coast.

And yes, the fact is that finally we can also go to the Majorcan beaches: so crowded in the summer and much quieter in the autumn. Maybe you do not want to take a bath, but you can go for a walk…or maybe enjoy some of the most impressive sunsets of the Mediterranean. It is clear: there are a lot of possible plans to make in Mallorca when the summer ends. Do not miss them!
