There is no doubt: one of the biggest sports attractions of Mallorca is cycling. Not in vain, many professional teams of cyclists flock to the island to prepare the season. The mild climate, the variety of landscapes, the sea, the mountain and the appropriate slopes, make the island a privileged place for this sport practice. We set out to unveil the secrets of cycling in Alcudia, one of the best areas of the island -perhaps the best- to hit the pedals with lots of energy.
To begin to familiarize yourself with the area, what better way than a simple and circular route with which to calmly inspect the surroundings? Departing from Alcudia, we must head towards the Albufereta and follow the path of Can Bregat to Pollensa; from there, to Cala de San Vicente and Puerto de Pollensa, from where we will return to Alcudia. The characteristics of this proposal: 38 kilometers in length, a moderate difficulty and only one hundred and fifty meters of altitude difference. Besides being able to enjoy ecosystems as interesting as Albufereta itself. This route can be extended in depth in the surroundings of this emblematic Natural Park of Mallorca.
Starting from the previous root, and if you want to complicate the route until it becomes difficult – also doubling the length up to about 73 kilometers – you can start at the Port of Alcudia, go from there to Alcudia, to the Port of Pollensa and Pollensa itself, climb towards Inca – passing Mount Tomir, the Monastery of Lluch, Caimari or Selva -, from there, turn back towards the Port of Alcudia passing through Sa Pobla.
A classic: the journey between Alcudia and Cabo Formentor. A spectacular route in terms of landscapes and views. Considered one of the best cycling routes in the world. There are many ways to raise it and with very different levels of difficulty. To squeeze all its possibilities, we propose a route of about 65 kilometers and high difficulty, with a drop of about 1350 meters. Departing from Alcudia, you have to head towards the Port of Pollensa and from there to the Talaia d’Albercutx, which offers incredible views on the way to the Formentor lighthouse. If you prefer a simpler route, you can start from Can Picafort to Alcudia and go through Coll Sa Creueta. The distance in this case is increased to 80 kilometers and the difference is close to one thousand five hundred meters. What has been said: this is the route par excellence of bicycle tourism in Alcudia, in Mallorca and in the Mediterranean.
An easy route and beach profile, ideal for beginners, leads us to La Victoria. There we can find ourselves face to face with S’Illot, one of the few Mallorcan beaches that remain practically intact and that is characterized by wonderful crystalline waters. The route is about 35 kilometers long and the difference in altitude is 350 meters. It begins in the Port of Alcudia and passes through Acunada, Es Mal Pas and the Ermita de la Victoria.
It is also highly recommended to go by bicycle to a beautiful place with historical alibi: the Camí de Coves Blanques, also known as Camí dels Prisoners , since it was built during the Civil War by Republican prisoners in order to be able to place heavy pieces of artillery. This route also allows us to visit the San Vicente cove or Coll de Siller, a place from which you can enjoy beautiful views of the port of Pollensa. It is a moderate difficulty route about 39 kilometers long.
Finally, and only for experts or professionals, we cannot stop proposing the route between Alcudia and Sa Calobra, crossing the wonderful Sierra de Tramontana and places like Cala Tuent or the reservoirs of Cúber and Gorg Blau. A route of extreme difficulty, of more than 120 kilometers in length. Another challenge of the Tramontana can be to crown the highest point of the island, the Puig Major, with its one thousand four hundred and forty-five meters.
The great advantage of leaving from Alcudia towards the mountains is to be able to enjoy the views of the Balearic sea on the right, for many of them one of the great pleasures of bicycle tourism on the island. As we have seen, the possibilities of cycling routes in Alcudia and its surroundings are immense. A gift for bicycle fans of all types and conditions who visit Mallorca, with levels of difficulty and profiles for all tastes.
